It’s no secret Saint Motel is one of my fave city of angels spawned bands- I can’t get enough of their poptastic hits, their contagious energy, and their recently released single is spreading through the states like a serious pandemic. No wonder the four boys are about to jet off on yet another West coast tour because apparently it’s considered “selfish” to keep their tunes all to our L.A. based selves.
To get the inside info on what’s up next for the fab four and what they’re doing to celebrate the 4th I battled an eight hour time difference to chat with front man A.J. and our skype date was anything but uneventful.
LN: Let’s talk a little bit about your upcoming show at LACMA- what’s the deal?
AJ: Yeah, it’s going to be in front of LACMA by all those street lights!
LN: Anything in particular to do with the Tim Burton exhibit that’s been getting all the buzz down in L.A.
AJ: Well if you get a ticket for the show, you get to head to the show and then head to the Tim Burton exhibit (and other exhibits!) after!
LN: Nice! Kind of a two-for-one deal for awesomeness!
LN: What’s up with the extras you get when you invest in the twenty-five dollar ticket?
AJ: Well aside from the concert you’ll get access to the museum exhibits as well as a limited edition art print by artist Patrick Haemmerlein
LN: How’d you meet the artist doing them?
AJ: You know, I’ve never met him, it’s somebody that’s involved with LACMA- but we’re all pretty excited about it!
LN: As am I! Hope you’re grabbing one for yourselves as well!
AJ: Yeah, I mean- I guess I’ll have to buy a ticket!
LN: You guys have an insane West coast tour coming up- how excited are you getting?
AJ: Pretty excited! I actually can’t believe it’s July already! I was just kind of getting used to June- and then that happened.
LN: Speaking of July- it’s almost the 4th! What are you going to do to celebrate?
AJ: I’m hopefully going to be doing one of a couple things! The Hollywood Bowl- Hall and Oates are playing- WITH a fireworks spectacular.
LN: a fireworks spectacular? That’s hard to be- what’s option number 2?
AJ: Well it’s also kind of fun to go to the beach. I think I’ve been to the beach for the last few years in a row.
LN: That’s a lot of pressure breaking tradition like that. If you do end up at the beach, tell it I miss it, and will be back to say hey soon enough. Also, console it a little in my absence.
AJ: Well there’s that- and then there’s Echo Park park, which has a lot of crazy illegal fireworks in he hands of children.
LN: That doesn’t sound dangerous at all.
LN: Back to the upcoming SM tour…which West coast date are you most excited to play?
AJ: I’m oretty excited to play all of them!
LN: Well that was a pretty PC answer AJ!
AJ: I’ll say some of my favorite cities so far have been San Francisco and Portland.
LN: I know you guys played a lot of brand new jams at SXSW this year- plan on playing anything brand new on tour or are you sticking with the tried and true SM basics?
AJ: We are definitely going to play some things we haven’t played live before! We’ve also decided to do a pretty ambitious cover of one of our favorite songs which I can’t say yet.
LN: Little hint!?
AJ…Yeah well…..NO.
LN: Alright alright, can’t blame a girl for trying.
As much as I’d be willing to keep Saint Motel a locals only secret apparently some people consider that “selfish” and plus, good gossip can’t go without spreading at the rate of a California wildfire- case in point, their annual zombie prom, now featured in Vegas. Their repeat performances may replay the same singable tunes- but their energy and the band’s now expected surprises and themes are always unpredictable- which is why I’ll never be tired of this particular band I’ve been lucky enough to see before. After all, I’ve only seen them on about five separate occasions now, and I have yet to not have been completely blown away. Also it’s not like I’m counting down to next year’s zombie prom already or anything. That would be…weird, right? I better go hide that calendar.
