Finishing up a successful stint in the City of Angels, The Pierces brought their show to the Hotel Café last night. Usually, a late night Tuesday gig may as well be the graveyard shift, but the alt-folk outfit nailed it in front of a near capacity crowd at the famed Hollywood venue.

Though this was the duo’s third show of the day, Allison and Catherine Pierce sounded incredible. Mixing in songs both old and new, The Pierces along with their terrific backing band, had the crowd roaring its approval throughout the set. The sisters were having a great time on stage and it was reflected by the tightness of their sound and control of the room. New Songs like “Love You More” and “We Are Stars” packed a punch and a familiarity to them that had the crowd singing along to the unknown lyrics. The duo’s playful banter was entertaining, especially as they were explaining the unofficial meanings behind some songs, which had everyone laughing. “Secret” and “Sticks and Stones” sounded as good live as it did on 2007’s Thirteen Tales of Love & Revenge.

The enthusiastic crowd called the girls back for an unexpected encore right after Allison had gotten off the stage. Catherine jokingly said that she knew the audience wanted more and asked for requests, which led to them playing their most popular song, “Boring,” which parodies celebrity socialites, which was befitting for Los Angeles. Although the girls played for 45 enjoyable minutes, they were so on that the mood seemed like they could go on for at least another 45.  Since hadn’t played L.A. in a while, Catherine said in between songs that they were making up for lost time with tonight’s set. Here’s to hoping that the talented New Yorkers-via-Birmingham, Alabama gals come back sooner than later.
