Hey Dallas! Check out the 35 Conferette this Thursday-Sunday in Denton!

If you happen to be lucky enough to live in Denton (like I once was), then you already know what’s happening this weekend. But for everyone outside of the ever-expanding musical mecca, this weekend is something to mark on your calendars with a big star. This Thursday, the small college town will be flooded with bands and music industry people for the third annual 35 Conferette. For years, many bands would stop in Denton on their way to South by Southwest the following week, so it just made sense for the city to make it an official event. I didn’t get to attend the first festival, but last year’s was pretty outrageous. It’s going to be hard to top a free outdoor performance by The Flaming Lips that was beyond psychedelic and of course, spectacular (see below for video clip, and be sure to wait for the 0:40 second mark). But so far the lineup for 2011 is ambitious to say the least, including such big names like rapper Big Boi, Philadelphia indie psychedelic rockers Dr. Dog (pictured above), and SoCal darlings Local Natives along with an eclectic mix of local, national, and international acts.

The 35 Conferette will begin Thursday afternoon on March 10th and run through Sunday, March 13th. Age restrictions vary by venue, but most allow adults ages 18 years and up. For events at the outdoor stages, children 7 and under are free. Wristbands are available for all four days, and the cost for all four is $85. For advance wristband purchase, please visit the 35 Conferette website here. The event will take place at several venues around Denton, with the main location located at 110 West Hickory Street. For all of you eager festival-goers, I would recommend preparing a list of your favorite must-see artists before you head to the festival. I would also highly recommend arriving early to any shows that you’re absolutely dying to see, as most of the venues will fill up fast!
