MP3 Premiere: Holy Folk – “How Many Ways”

In 2009, songwriters Keith Waggoner and Josh Caldwell decided to begin a musical endeavor together while both playing in Les Blanks. As a duo, the Los Angeles-based musicians released Heavy Hands, a digital-only EP, in 2011. Though the debut was well-received, it wasn’t until the following year that Holy Folk took the form it’s in today.

The two-piece recruited Ryan George and Jonathan Hylander, and together the quartet began to play shows around L.A. and recording songs that would eventually make up the band’s first full-length, Motioning, which dropped on June 18 via SIlver Side. Today we are proud to premiere the album’s newest single, “How Many Ways.”

Despite the band’s clever name, it is much more than a folk band. “How Many Ways” begins with a staccato acoustic guitar riff accompanied by a playful piano arrangement. When the Dylan-esque vocals come in the folk influences become apparent, but glimpses of indie-pop shine through in the buoyant instrumentation.

With each of the four members playing equal parts in the songwriting process, there is no “front man” in Holy Folk. This setup allows for a diverse range of songs while maintaining a balance of sorts throughout the album. The four-piece recently played its record release show at L.A.’s El Cid, and we’re eager for more live dates!
