Though it may be the dead of winter, it is always summer in Pacific Air’s book. Hailing from Southern California, the brotherly dream-pop duo of Ryan and Taylor Lawhon manage to bottle up all of the sun, luxury and lust for life of their home and export it into sparkling, chiming, weightless songs.
The video for the two-piece’s first single, “Float,” couldn’t be a better visual representation of the band’s music. Beginning with a tan, blond model gingerly diving into a swimming pool and transitioning to a lush brunette girl in a vintage swimsuit floating in the water and sunbathing, the song begins with jovial whistling and faint, electronic percussion. As the vocals kick in, the screen splits (think Apple’s Photobooth, but instead of people dividing their faces in half while sitting at their computer, it’s a kaleidoscopic image of beautiful people lounging in the sun) and we see mirror images of sexy, sunbathing goddesses and the suave Lawhon brothers lying in the grass, basking in the SoCal rays.
A buoyant keyboard riff steers the song along and flutters away as breathy vocals soar over minimalistic instrumentation. A true glimpse of summer, this is the perfect video to watch and romanticize over on a cold, winter day.
“Float” appears on Pacific Air’s recently released debut EP, Long Live Koko—a tribute to their old incarnation, Ko Ko. The duo is currently on an East Coast tour with Walk The Moon and will embark on a national tour with Ra Ra Riot in February before playing The Governor’s Ball in New York June 7-9 with the likes of Kanye West, Kings of Leon, Grizzly Bear and The XX.
