A veteran of the Los Angeles music scene, Nick Goose has finally taken off on his own, releasing his first solo EP, Change Please. It’s not just a clever title for an album. In this case, it’s an artist taking a chance on a new sound, but it is the first step on embarking on a new adventure as a solo artist.
The album kicks off with “Kicked In The Door,” which features a slow guitar and deeply personal lyrics. You can feel the singer’s emotion through this indie-pop driven song. Surprisingly, for a singer/songwriter, the sound on this track is pretty full and big, with standout drums and a cool, pretty trippy guitar, which is rich in tone and has a Radiohead feel to it.
The brooding “In The Morning” tackles the sins of everyday life, which here, are described as being pretty boring. Goose wants a change and is tired of the daily grind, and this is his way of channeling that aggression. A bluesy guitar solo and earnest lyrics are highlights here.
“Box of Spring” is the best track on the EP. Upbeat, uptempo and an overall rocker, the music on this song interesting and has splashes of electro-indie-pop at its core. The tempo keeps your head bobbing and sounds like many of the great songs that have become synonymous with the L.A. music scene.
For his first proper solo release, Nick Goose shows a lot of promise. Heartfelt lyrics and simple, yet complex arrangements show that this veteran of the scene has a lot of potential to score on his own if he is able to channel his focused songwriting onto a full body of work, also known as an album.
Change Please is available on iTunes and every online retailer.
