As wild co-eds roamed the poolside and casino of the Palms hotel in Las Vegas, Saint Motel was hard at work polishing up their SXSW set with a two-night stint at the venerable venue. Though many of the people who were at the resort for Spring Break, there were many who were converted to the infectious energy and incredibly catchy music that is Saint Motel.
Though the room was barren at the beginning of the band’s 12:15 am stage time, by the end of the night, nearly 75 percent of the crowd were going wild and dancing, clearly moved by the band’s sound. They had little other choice, especially since many had not heard the quartet before.
The Los Angeles-natives debuted many of the new songs that are going to be on their yet-to-be titled debut LP. Sprinkled in with the tunes were old favorites like “Butch,” “Dear Dictator” and “Do Everything Now,” which pack a punch and sound very tight.
New songs like “At Least I Have Nothing” and “Puzzle Pieces” dazzled the modest sized crowd. However, it wasn’t until the band’s closing number, “Stories,” where the audience, in true Vegas form, completely lost their shit. Fans charged the area in front of the stage to dance with reckless abandon, while one woman ran on stage to dance with the band and surprisingly didn’t interrupt Aaron Sharp’s shredding or A.J. Jackson concentration. As usual, bassist Dak and drummer Greg Erwin provided the thunderous foundation to the band’s sound, which by this point had everyone going bananas.

Saint Motel proved that despite the size of the crowd and a less than ideal venue that they can treat every gig like it’s last. The one thing that can be guaranteed at a Saint Motel show is that not only will be it different than the last, but that they will bring the energy and have fun regardless of the circumstances.
